I’ve visited my doc’s office twice in two weeks with left-hand swelling, throbbing pain, skin discoloration from dark red to deep purple and the only sensation I have is when my hand brushes against anything, the pain is severe enough to drop me to my knees. It started in April with a simple itchy finger. Within days, the itch was becoming painful. Swelling and throbbing, I saw my doc. ”Nothing wrong,” she says. Days later, my entire left hand was swollen, my fingers were purple as were my fingernails, with pain so intense I would awaken with absolute ”white pain.” Again, my doc tells me ”nothing wrong.” How could she not see the difference between my left and right (healthy-ish) hand? I had been taking pics daily to measure the distinct changes, yet she still disbelieved me. To satiate my ”hypochondriac mind” doc referred me to a neurologist of my insurance carrier’s choice. Dr. Gandhi ran tests, he could see the problem, however, it is not a neurological issue so there was nothing he could do. I asked him about temporary relief, but because he is not my GP, he wasn’t even legally empowered to suggest treatment or even home remedy. I called my doc’s office immediately to ask what do I do now. It was Friday, 3:18 pm. The office answering machine picked up my call with a message the office was closed for the day. HA! I called the after-hours receptionist, left my message and waited. Within minutes my call was returned…by my doc’s personal receptionist. Her advice? Come in Monday, my personal GP won’t be in but her business partner will be. Great! A fresh set of eyes. Dr. Ebrahem is wonderful, and for a short time, he was my primary doc. I had stopped seeing him only because, as a woman, I prefer a woman doctor.
Don’t get me wrong, Dr. Hussein, my GP, is an incredible doctor. With her, I feel no pressure or embarrassment to be straight forward and honest, tactfully and respectfully. I would recommend her to anyone. In fact, both doctors there are remarkable. I am excited, if that even makes sense, to see Dr. Ebrahem Monday, not for any other reason than earlier mentioned of a fresh set of eyes. Pray. Pray. Praytell he has a diagnosis, as I am almost all cried out.
