Calcium ions if left undisturbed in urine can form hard deposits that take the form of a stone. Citrates bind to the calcium ions and prevent the stone formation.
Regular breakdown of bone causes the calcium to get absorbed into the blood which finally gets eliminated through urine. Phosphates regulate and reduce bone breakdown thus reducing calcium ions from causing kidney stones.
Commonly known as baking soda, sodium bicarbonate is effective in treating kidney stones formed due to uric acid precipitation.
It makes the urine less acidic, thus reducing the possibility of kidney stone formation.
In case of large stones formed in the kidney, scratches may form internally that lead to possibility of development of an infection. In such cases, antibiotics are prescribed to curb the infection.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSADs)
They are a class of compounds that work at alleviating pain. They can be used in cases where kidney stones are painful.
Most effective in treating calcium kidney stones, thiazide prevents the deposition of calcium in the bladder or the kidney, thus preventing or treating kidney stones that are formed as a result of deposition of calcium salts.
Excess uric acid in urine may precipitate, leading to formation of kidney stone. Allopurinol restricts the formation of uric acid in urine to a large extent, thus ruling out the possibility of developing a kidney stone due to uric acid deposition.
Kidney stones that may form due to deposition of cystine may be effectively prevented or treated by the use of Penicillamine drugs. However, it does have some side effects.
Another drug used to treat kidney stones arising from cystine deposition, Tiopronin works by keeping the cystine dissolved in the urine.
Calcium stones formed in the kidney can be treated by using orthophosphate drugs which works by increasing the calcium uptake by the bones and thus reducing the amount of calcium dissolved in urine.
Used generally for treating cystine stones in the bladder or the kidney, this drug is quite effective and binds itself to cystine and prevents its deposition.
Other than medications, certain dietary changes may also be recommended by your physician. In case of very large stones, surgery is the best option as some people describe the passing of stone as painful as childbirth.
