Our nose is made up of a number of tiny and sensitive blood vessels. These blood vessels are also delicate that when these vessels get disturbed, they cause bleeding of the nose. While mostly it is just one nostril which bleeds, but sometimes even both the nostrils may bleed. This bleeding is temporary and may last up to few minutes. But in some cases, where the damage is more the bleeding may take even 10 minutes to stop bleeding. If such bleeding does not stop in 10 minutes or takes longer time to stop, it may result in weakness, dizziness, fainting, etc. This tendency of nose bleeding is commonly found in small children and elderly people between the age group of 50 to 80 years.

Pinching Of The Nose

Easiest way to arrest bleeding is to pinch your nose. By pinching your nose, you send pressure signals to the bleeding point present in the nasal septum resulting it in stopping the blood flow immediately. Just sit in an upright position and hold your nose with the help of your thumb and index finger. When you press your nose, breathe through your mouth. Do this for 5 to 10 minutes and repeat till the bleeding doesn’t stop.


Apple Cider Or White Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar or white vinegar, both are effective solutions which help in stopping nose bleed and arresting the blood vessels from bleeding by sealing them. Just soak one cotton swab in the vinegar and put it gently in the nostril which is bleeding. Keep it for a good 10 minutes. Alternatively, you may also mix this apple cider vinegar in warm water and drink it at least three times in a day.

The natural fumes emitted from onion are very effective in clotting of the blood, thereby helping in stopping it from flowing. Just slice some onion and keep it under your nose, inhale the fumes for 1-2 minutes and see the difference. Else, you can also put a few drops of onion juice on the affected part and repeat it as and when needed.



Cayenne acts as a stimulant and helps in regulating the blood flow from the nose. It removes the pressure from the bleeding area and helps in quick arrest of blood flow. You can either consume cayenne tablets or you may put cayenne powder in warm water and then drink the juice.


Saline Water

Nose bleed can also result on account of dryness of the nose. So in such cases, there is a need to moisturize and soothing relief to such nasal membranes. So just add ½ teaspoon of salt to water, mix it well and put two to three drops of such saline water on the bleeding portion. Alternatively, you can also get saline based nasal drops in the market, which also can be effective.

Known for garnishing food preparations, coriander is also effective in treating nose bleeds. Either you put a few drops of coriander juice onto your inner lining of your nose or you make a paste of it and apply it on your forehead thereby cooling your body from heat and stopping it from bleeding further.

Consisting of astringent properties, nettle is also very effective in case of nose bleeds. Nettle helps in arresting and the blood flow and promotes blood clotting. Further, it also helps in strengthening the capillaries as well as in treating allergies which may cause nose bleeds. Either you can smell some dried nettle leaves or you may extract its juice or if you are prone to regular nose bleeds then have a regular intake of nettle tea.

Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum jelly helps in moisturizing your skin. So when your nostrils turn dry due to which they may bleed, just apply some petroleum jelly which is gentle on your nostrils and will help in preventing them from bleeding. However, do not inhale petroleum jelly.

Holy Basil

Holy Basil is one more remedy which has been discovered in Ayurveda for treating nose bleeds. Basil has many amazing medicinal properties which prevent the nose from bleeding. So either chews some raw leaves or extract its juice and then just apply two drops of it on the nostrils.

Cold Compress

One more technique which finds a place in stopping the nose from bleeding is the process of cold compress. Owing to the cold temperature which is put on the nose, it stops the nose from bleeding within few minutes. Just sit in an upright position and take some ice cubes and wrap them in a towel. Dab the towel on the bridge of your nose for 5 to 10 minutes. The bleeding will stop immediately.
